UK National Wellbeing Measures: Northern Ireland Data February 2014

Creator:

Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)

Subject Keywords: Measures of national wellbeing for the UK and Northern Ireland
Type: Report
Region: Northern Ireland
Description:

In 2010, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) commenced a programme of work to measure national wellbeing (MNWB). The aim of that programme was to extend understanding of how the UK was progressing, beyond using only the traditional economic measures such as GDP, by also considering other measures which reflect social and environmental wellbeing. The MNWB programme linked in with similar initiatives internationally, including those undertaken by the OECD, the United Nations, the European Union and the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi Commission.

At the beginning of the programme the ONS launched a public consultation which ran throughout 2010 and into 2011. From this, the ONS developed a framework for measuring national wellbeing. The basis of this framework was ten domains which were identified as important components of, and contributors towards, national wellbeing. Within each of the domains, sit a range of indicators which provide the metrics for the domains. The data have been presented by ONS in a summary interactive wheel, as well as through detailed analytical reports. The most recent version of the summary wheel was published by ONS in September 2013 and comprises ten domains and 41 indicators in total.

This publication seeks to present the Northern Ireland data for as many of those 41 indicators as possible, in a similar wheel format, together with some further detail and commentary. It should be noted that there are some gaps in the data available for Northern Ireland. A number of the wellbeing indicators use sources that are only available at the UK level. In other instances, the Northern Ireland source may not provide exactly comparable data. Where the two sets of data are not directly comparable, this is depicted in the NI wheel, and in the subsequent graphics of this publication, by a dotted pattern. In addition, where relevant and possible, differences between NI and UK figures rising from sample surveys have been tested for statistical significance.
