The Northern Ireland Seat Belt Survey has been carried out by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency on behalf of Department of the Environment since 1994, usually on an annual basis. Survey data are collected at 15 sites throughout Northern Ireland, six of which are located on rural roads, six on urban roads and three on motorways. Fieldwork involves observing stationary traffic and recording details of occupants such as gender, estimated age and whether a seat belt or child restraint is being used.
