The results of PwC's 2001 survey showed businesses in a largely positive mood about mobility. Expectations for a growing population of mobile workers were high. Businesses foresaw an army of educated, competent foreign workers as a solution to growing skills gaps. Five years on, this rosy picture has failed to materialise.

Yet the need for mobile workers remains high on the HR agenda and the survey sample continues to believe that mobility will increase considerably in the coming years. For employers and policy makers to see these expectations fulfilled, they need to take some positive steps to combat the present lack of information about opportunities and to help potential mobile workers form a more positive view of the undoubted possibilities that mobility can offer them.
