Statistics from the Northern Ireland breast cancer screening programme. The Breast Screening Programme covers the whole of Northern Ireland. It involves staff from GP surgeries, Health Centres, hospital-based Breast Screening Units and the Regional Screening Office. the uptake rate is the percentage of women within the target age group (50-64 years) who accept their invitation to screening. Information from the National Breast Screening Programme indicates that uptake of 70% or more is the optimum needed to achieve a significant reduction in breast cancer. Northern Ireland’s rate is currently at 74.6%.
