Description:

The last ten consecutive cases operated on before 1st January 2004 were included. Ten hospital trusts where oesophageal surgery was undertaken were invited and nine trusts participated. 73% of cases were given preoperative chemotherapy and the regime was Cisplatin/ 5- fluorouracil for 66% of cases and 21% of cases Epirubicin/cisplatin/5FU. Reasons for not being given chemotherapy were clinical staging, co-morbidity and patient choice. The policy in all trusts was to offer chemotherapy to T3 or node positive tumours dependant on co-morbidity and patient choice. Recommendation to repeat the audit in three years, with entry into the OE05 trial as the standard for resectable adenocarcinomas, staged T3/4 or node positive.
