PPR reaches €517 million

04 Apr 2015

Billy Kelleher, Fianna Fáil TD

The total private patient acute revenue, from public and private beds in the first 11 months of last year, was €517 million.

In 2013, the only charge for private patients in public beds was the Statutory Inpatient Charge (SIC) — the €75 per night charged to all patients in 2013 to a maximum of 10 nights per annum. However, as a result of the Health (Amendment) Act 2013, this charge only applies to public patients from January 1, 2014. The total acute revenue for the SIC revenue for both public and private patients in 2013 was €50 million.

The HSE said its systems “do not allow the isolation of charges raised last year for private inpatients treated in public hospitals”.

These cannot be separated from the total private patient revenue. “We are currently investigating system solutions to provide us with this data in the future,” the Executive said in response to Dáil questioning by Deputy Billy Kelleher.

The Health Act enables the provision of inpatient services by the HSE to non-public or private patients.

This legislation requires that the HSE raise charges to private patients receiving in-patient services in a public hospital.
