Housing strategies that improve Indigenous health outcomes (Resource sheet / Closing the Gap Clearinghouse no. 25)

19 Dec 2013

Housing has long been recognised as a key social determinant of health, and interventions aimed at improving housing conditions can also improve physical health, mental health and social wellbeing. This resource sheet examines the links between housing quality and health outcomes, the mechanisms by which housing influences health outcomes, and a range of practices that can improve the condition of Indigenous housing. It reviews what works, what doesn't, and what further research is needed. Note, this review only looks at housing quality: housing affordability, home ownership, and security of tenure are also associated with health but are outside the scope of this study.
