[Editorial] Truth versus myth on mental illness, suicide, and crime

The stigmatisation of those with mental health disorders is alive and well, despite decades of campaigning to improve public understanding and to reduce discrimination. Last week, the UK's best-selling newspaper, The Sun, chose to put “1,200 killed by mental patients” on its front page, with the number outlined in blood red. “Shock 10-year toll exposes care crisis” was at the bottom of the page. With daily circulation figures of more than 2 million, and with the largest combined print and online readership of all UK newspapers, The Sun's influence is substantial.
