[Correspondence] Alcohol consumption in Iran

Alcohol-related disorders including dependency, overdose, and its contribution to medical and psychological disorders are a health problem worldwide. In Islamic countries, however, religious beliefs have confined this problem. In countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia producing, selling, and drinking alcohol is a punishable crime. Stigma linked to alcohol use in these countries has long postponed a thorough scientific debate and health programming.
