Changes in Recent Marijuana Use During Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood among African American Females in the South

Purpose: Marijuana is one the most commonly used substances among adolescents, and rates of adolescent marijuana use are increasing in the U.S. A growing body of literature shows that adolescent substance use trajectories vary by race and gender. However, data on marijuana use among African American female adolescents is scarce. Young African American women, particularly in the Southern U.S., are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and a priority population for prevention interventions.
