Care for children in school holidays

Balancing the demands of work and child care can be difficult at any time of the year, but the school holidays pose an additional challenge for working parents. Using data from 'Growing Up in Australia, the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children' (LSAC), this chapter explores the different ways families arrange school holiday care for primary-school-aged children. It examines the use of formal and informal care arrangements, and differences for lone and two-parent families, nonresident fathers, child age groups, and employment characteristics. The findings highlight the need for formal programs and also recognises the role of grandparents and other relatives in helping working parents.
