Diabetes mellitus represents a major clinical and economic burden worldwide. It is one of most common insidious disorders, and most challenging health problems in the 21st century. The total number of people with diabetes mellitus has been projected to increase globally from 366 million in 2011 to 552 million by 2030 (Box 1).1,2 China, India and the USA in that order have high prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus (Table 1).
