Adolescent Bariatric Surgery: Identifying Co-morbidities and Evaluating Success of an Interdisciplinary Treatment Team

Adolescent obesity and severe obesity have increased significantly over the past thirty years. Most obese adolescents become obese adults and develop medical diseases and psychosocial problems. Adolescent obesity treatment often focuses on lifestyle modifications, and can be effective in the short-term but has disappointing long-term results. Bariatric surgery induces durable and sustainable weight loss in adults, remission of co-morbidities, and increased longevity. Adolescent bariatric surgery increased five-fold from 1997-2003 and is emerging as an effective treatment for adolescents with severe obesity.
