The NHS has revealed new mandatory guidelines to raise standards of hospital food across the country

These new guidelines from the Hospital Food Standards Panel are legally binding and will see benefits for patients, staff and visitors.  Under the changes, all patients will be checked for malnutrition, given an individual food plan and get help eating and drinking.  Canteen food must also be healthy, meet guidelines on salt, sugar and fat and be sustainably sourced.  In addition to the these compulsory standards, it is also recommended that all hospitals develop a food and drink policy that aims to encourage healthy eating, high-quality food production, sustainability and excellent nutritional care.  Hospitals will be scored on the standard of their food, with results to be posted online on NHS Choices.
